As I write this first entry on the Toporek.com blog, I am aware of how difficult and exciting it is to start anything new. I’m not just talking about the blog, or the creation of this website, but about the decision to take a new path in life.
For nearly two decades I have enjoyed working as a communication designer, and the rewards of doing so have been many. I’ve worked with most of the major record labels, met lots of interesting celebrities, got invited to participate at the Latin Grammys and have been teaching (and learning) at several educational institutions. On the other hand, I have spent countless hours creating intricate imagery for advertising firms to promote this or that product, and as fun as the creative process may be, it seems to me that the final output is unnecessary. I want to make it clear that I’m not criticizing anyone who works in creating commercial design, I just don’t want to participate in it anymore.
For me, this website is a step in a new direction. It represents an opportunity to share the artwork that I have been creating outside the constrains of a commercial practice, a chance to visually express the ideas I find interesting and inspiring. It is my hope that others will find this work inspiring as well, and that with their kind patronage I will be able to completely shift my attention from communication design to personal artwork.
So I want to use this first entry to thank you, the reader, for your interest and support. I also want to thank my family and friends who have encouraged me to take the leap.
I particularly want to thank my friend and business partner Reynaldo Tortoledo. This website would not exist without his talent and tireless efforts. I am grateful to have “The Rabies”.
Finally, I would like to invite you to participate on the blog, please feel free to leave your comments. I will try to post as frequently as I can.
